I saw this, and realized that I’d completely forgotten about Mrs. Frisby/Brisby when we put together this year’s Mothers’ Day list of mother characters who are also the protagonists of their stories. So here’s something like what I might have written, if I’d remembered at the time, based mostly on my recollection of the film, since I’ve seen it much more recently than I read the book.
Listen: homegirl is a mouse who stands up to an owl who I, as a human being, find legitimately terrifying. She saves her kids, and while while mourning the untimely death of her husband still has the strength to sing them hopeful lullabyes. She drugs a cat, which, by the way, is how her husband died. Oh, and she does that all while being, according to the facts of the setting, one of the the least intelligent rodents in the entire film.
