Manga suggestions for a preteen girl?

Greetings, Tumblr! We received this email recently and thought you could help out:

I’m a twenty-seven year old male, and I have a ten year-old niece. My question to you is whether or there are some manga, comics or anime that are appropriate for her age group and are not prone to the pitfalls of chauvinism and gender negative stereotypes that nerdy media is known for. My niece has been interested in anime for a few years now and I’ve secured a foothold with several Miyazaki films. However her mother is one of those “If I think it’s too weird, it’s inappropriate,” kind of people (she thinks the transformations in Sailor Moon are too risqué) so heavy content is sketchy. I became a fan in high school so my knowledge of children’s manga is somewhat skewed. My niece is going to be eleven soon and I want her to be herself and not to change herself into something else for others… I’d appreciate your help.

So you should know what to do! Reblog with suggestions (if you really want to help, include a brief description for Mr. 27M so he can pick the ones that his niece would really dig) and then we’ll all have a great resource for answering this question!
