With such a low bar, you’d think more movies would pass, but just as with the Bechdel-Wallace test, you find out that there actually aren’t that many that do pass at all.
While I understand how white people in the industry might miss the point because of ingrained personal biases and blind spots, it’s interesting to me that artists of color can miss the point for entirely different reasons.
Seeing a woman of color validate my experiences meant more to me than words can express. Before Korra came along, I was unconsciously taught by the media that these kinds of things only happen to white people. I felt so alone until Korra and her spiritual journey told me I wasn’t.
Right now, it seems like there are a lot of white, straight, cis, able-bodied men who want to be allies to women, communities of color, LGBTQ+ communities, and the disabled community, but fear keeps them from being as effective as they can be. And rather than scoff at that fear, or tell them to get over it, I want to address it. Because it’s understandable. I certainly don’t pity a community who, because of the privilege they’ve had their entire lives, have been sheltered from the anger of marginalized communities and are now, thanks to the Internet, shocked by the volume of it. However, I understand it, and I ask that they stop and examine it.
In recent years, quite a few queenpins have risen to the top of the body pos/plus size crop. Unignorably so, Tess Holliday (formerly known as Tess Munster) has reached heights not previously achievable in this genre by becoming the first signed...
As you should know by now, the lead is an adorable lil 15 year old who goes by Tip and is voiced by Rihanna. Let me tell you more about Tip:
She and her mom (voiced by Jennifer Lopez) are both immigrants from Barbados
She’s a big nerd and, as she proudly says more than once to Jim Parsons’ alien character Oh, got an A in geometry
She was treated different by the other kids and had trouble fitting in
OK LOOK AT HER. SUCH a realistic body! Unsexualized, normal clothes, beautiful curls…love her.
Anyway, this movie is about imperialism. It’s not even trying to be subtle, like, first minute, bam, imperialism. So sassy.
Tip’s mom is looking for her, and describes her as: “she’s got big green eyes and beautiful brown skin.” Score.
The crowd shots in this movie are the most diverse I’ve seen; you can tell what an effort they put in to incorporate people of all races and body types. There was even a casual Muslim couple conversing with another pair (don’t remember their races), several dudes and ladies with dreads, just so much diversity I couldn’t even take it all in.
Dreamworks needs your help!!! They’re in a bit of a financial pinch, and this studio is too good to go under.
