I Thought That Sign Said “Girls ALLOWED”: Why Joan Watson Is Not Going To Ruin Your Life

gyzym

Okay, it’s time to talk about Joan Watson!

I have not made an opinion post about this since Lucy Liu was cast in the role for Elementary, though I have expressed some thoughts about what I would like from the character. I didn’t make an opinion post because, frankly, everyone else was doing them; I also didn’t make an opinion post because, while I love love love the casting choice and I’m hugely excited to see how it plays out, there is no show to have an opinion about yet.  It seemed…well, it seemed a little silly, honestly, to puff up my feels feathers before we even have a pilot, before we know if this show is going to make it through its first season, before we have ANY real information other than “Hey, an Asian woman was cast as Watson!” which, in what I can see now was naivety, I assumed everyone would see as an exciting step forward for the extensive body of work that is the Holmes canon and its assorted reinterpretations.

So you can IMAGINE MY SURPRISE, fandom, to discover that not only was there extensive negative response, but that there is in fact still extensive negative response. With no show to go off of and no real information except a photo of JLM and Lucy Liu looking FAB, there is still! Extensive hate! And that, folks, is ri-goddamn-diculous. So I’m going to go through now and address the points I see raised most often, because, just, what.

This isn’t just a talk on why there’s nothing wrong with casting a woman as John Watson, but it’s also a great meditation on fandom, what it’s like, that it should be like, and when it needs to calm down.
