In a lot of ways, it’s stunning to see arguments on the internet take off in defense of rape and sexual assault because ‘it’s historically accurate,’ yet inclusion of gender diverse identities (which have existed since the dawn of freakin’ time) are somehow not. Moreover, the argument that this is a fantasy universe, the Baldur’s Gate universe, implies that just because it hasn’t been mentioned before means it can’t ever be mentioned going forward.

Friend: it’s a video game. This is a fantasy world, as many people have so astutely pointed out, and it’s a world where anything can happen, so why is it so hard to accept that a character is trans? Why is it that the moment a trans character is included, it’s suddenly a 'social justice issue’ and there’s an 'agenda’ at play? People will readily accept literally anything else in their video games, but the moment sexuality or gender are discussed, it’s 'woah there pal, let’s not be too hasty, now.

Out of all the female characters, Bayonetta does have the distinction of being one of the few actually starring and playable in their own series. Many of the female characters in Smash are merely on the sidelines of the games they come from. In light of the game’s ESRB E+ rating, Nintendo also toned down Bayo’s provocative attire. Instead of becoming buck-naked during her wicked weave attacks, Bayo simply reveals a little leg, and her poses are more kitsch than raunchy. With Smash’s fixed perspective camera, we’re certainly getting fewer crotch-shots. So, if one’s only interaction with Bayonetta is Smash Bros., I think she’s utterly harmless. Yet, if players find her entertaining enough to purchase her solo game, which many likely will, then they might get a whole lot more than they bargained for.

Maybe us feminists really are “ruining everything.” If by “ruining everything” you mean “putting more emphasis on characters’ faces.”
